5 Ways To Be Intentional in 2018
New goals. New me. New Dreams. The Best Is Yet to Come. This is My Year.
I think we’ve all heard (& if we’re honest with ourselves probably used!) some of these new year statements. But what can take them from instagrammable quotes to reality in our lives?
Now I'm all for living with hope and expectation but the older I get, the more I realise that life doesn’t always go as we planned so rather than focusing on attaining specific goals, each year my big picture goal is to grow and develop with purpose.
I’m a firm believer in the word intentionality and the need for it in every area of our lives - whether that be in relationships and friendships, the way we spend our time and our money or our life perspective.
Towards the end of last year, partly as I was tired and a bit stressed, being intentional was something that went out of the window but I’m determined to get back on track at the start of this year!
1 | TAKE TIME TO DISCOVER YOUR PURPOSE
Purpose | ˈpəːpəs/
the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
The key to truly living a life of intention in the long run is understanding our purpose; understanding the reason why we exist and understanding what brings us true fulfilment in life. In a sense it’s like understanding the big picture of our lives and the bigger story which we can be a part of.
Without purpose, it is easy to drift from year to year being busy but sometimes not achieving the results that we hope. But when we live with purpose - it helps us prioritise the way we use our time, our resources and the relationships and friendships we choose to invest in. It has a way of focusing us and helping us make the most of every moment which is something to be grateful for.
2 | COMMIT TO CONTINUALLY LEARNING
A few years ago during a conversation with one of my mentors, I asked him what kept him motivated. He said simply, the opportunity to keep learning. Now, as someone who was so successful, this simple statement left an indelible imprint on me. If someone who had decades of experience and was so wildly successful in their field could say that even at this stage, learning was a priority, how much more so, someone like me in my 20s at the start of my adult life?
Whether it be our knowledge, our skill-set or the know-how of how to do things - there is always the opportunity to learn. When we carry this attitude into every area of our lives - it will always be a win-win situation as increasing in knowledge and wisdom can only help us live a more blessed life.
3 | LIMIT DISTRACTIONS
Our generation are probably the generation with the most opportunities at our disposal but also the one with the most distractions that have the potential to thwart us fulfilling our destinies.
In my life I’ve found I’m constantly writing lists, setting out to do things, but then before I know it, 100 things have come my way and I’ve lost my focus! The biggest distraction for me in 2017 was Instagram so it’s something this year I want to be conscious of. By the Christmas holidays, I would notice that hours (and hours!) would go by mindlessly scrolling through the explore page…!
Distractions come in all forms so for you it might be people’s opinions, a negative attitude, trying to do too many things at once and so on.
Limiting distractions means focusing on our purpose. It means being present and embracing each moment.
4 | SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE YOU
I’m sure most of us have heard the mantra that you become like the five people you surround yourself with the most.
Whether it be our friends, our mentors, our other halves - being in a community with people who inspire us, who encourage us, who challenge us to be the best version of ourselves and who remind who we are on days when we don't have the strength - is a key tenet of living a life of purpose.
When I was younger, my diary would literally be free for coffee with any and everyone and it wasn’t until I started to feel drained and lacked clarity that I realised what a mistake that was...! If we value our lives and our future, the company we keep is something to take seriously.
5 | STAY IN YOUR LANE
This week the actor John Boyega tweeted ‘In 2018 show love to your own lane’. When I’m feeling inadequate, I’m always encouraged when I remind myself that we’re all unique. We all have different talents, passions and races to run in this life.
A key way to be intentional in 2018 is to focus on the race we have to run and prioritise becoming the best version of ourselves rather than competing with others or trying to become somebody else.
The more I think about it, the more getting out of our lane is so counter-productive. We often do it as we might see somebody who else who has a ‘formula’ that works - whether it be in their career aspirations, their looks or their relationships. But in life, who are the people we are most impressed by and who achieve the most? 9/10 they are those who thrive truly as themselves! It’s an area of personal challenge and something I really want to work in 2018.
Whatever last year brought you - no doubt highs and lows - I hope 2018 is full of new opportunities and renewed vision for all of us. I hope we’ll look back on this year with great memories - not just at what we achieved, but who we continued to become and the purpose with which we lived life to the full.
Thank you guys so much for your support last year. Feel so blessed and grateful and looking forward to the year ahead with you all!
