Announcing My Bridesmaids
So as we near the end of a busy year, I’m excited to finally have the time to focus on our wedding!
After getting engaged, we started off with our engagement party in May and the next part of #MeetTheAfolabis was announcing our bridal train.
I went first and a few weeks ago I announced my bridal party! It was something I’d been looking forward to doing for months as I wanted to make sure that from the beginning, every detail of the wedding was perfect for our friends and family and that people knew how much we valued their friendship.
You often hear horror stories of how stressful it is to be a bridesmaid but I’m hoping and praying my #BrideSquad have the most amazing few months as they share this life-changing experience with me.
So as someone who is in to details, my proposal was ALL about the details. I wanted to put together a hamper for each of them - with gifts that were not just stunning but also that they would use.
I have to give a MAJOR SHOUT OUT to two incredible female-run brands who partnered with me to help make this a reality.
The first was GiftnPetals. I’d come across them a few months ago on Instagram and they’re based in Nigeria but were gracious enough to send me the gifts all the way from there. They sent over all personalised gifts including hotel slippers (which I always LOVE and are my favourite part of travelling!), a compact mirror (as us ladies always seem to be looking for one!) and hair brushes.
The second brand I worked with was PrettyNPersonal. I came across them when I went to the National Wedding Show and they were beyond incredible and I actually cried when I first got the boxes from them. They helped me with the proposal by giving me these beautiful and elegant magnetic boxes, personalised makeup bags and glasses. I know the bridal party will have a lot to do over the year but I wanted them each to know how honoured I would be for them to say yes to being part of the journey.
I'd told the girls various things as to why I was hosting a ladies dinner in November. I told some of them I was having a very (very!) late dinner to celebrate my birthday as I hadn't got round to it. Others I just said I was having a get together with my girlfriends - but either way they came! My favourite restaurant/bar Grind played host for the evening. I got there early to set up and had the photos done so that I was ready when the girls arrived.
As Ayo was there filming and a photographer, I think at first some of them were pretty on edge wondering what on earth was going on! Once everyone was seated I went to go and get the boxes and presented them to each of the girls and then on '3' got everyone to open them.
It was such a beautiful moment - tears, shock and excitement about the journey ahead. The funniest thing was that one of my bridesmaids because we got engaged in February and hadn't heard anything about invites (even though I've discussed the wedding with her!) thought she wasn't even invited so was speechless to find out that she would be on the bridal train! As some of the girls are internationally based, two of them weren't there but it was an equally emotional moment asking them as well.
I've got 7 incredible girls on my bridal train (you'll get to meet them soon) - including two maid of honours. Some I've been friends with since I was a teenager, others are family and others have really become family to Ayo and I over the last few years and I can't imagine sharing the experience with anyone else. Although they're all very different they're all incredibly kind, passionate, hilarious and I know will help make the experience of the next year so enjoyable and I'm honoured that they said yes (not that they had a choice!).
Stay tuned to see next how Ayo asked his boys to be part of his #GroomSquad!
